Ask Tennant About Green Cleaning

Q: Do you have any advice as to how I can implement a biodegradable and recyclable cleaning program?

A: Green cleaning programs can help protect the health of your facility and your people. Plan to measure your success according to clearly defined goals and your level of commitment to green cleaning. Consider issues related to the cleaning process as well as types of cleaning products used. Here are some quick and easy tips for getting started.

  • Reduce dirt and debris – The less dirt there is to clean, the fewer chemicals you’ll use, the fewer contaminants in the air, and the healthier the building. Use outdoor entrance mats to catch dirt, sand, mud and other outdoor debris, and use indoor walk-off mats to catch water and smaller pieces of debris.

  • Use micro-fiber cleaning cloths – Micro-fiber cleaning cloths eliminate the need for chemical spray cleaners while effectively capturing dust, debris and even water.

  • Invest in a good vacuum – Vacuuming removes up to 80 percent of the dirt on your carpeted surfaces. Invest in a vacuum that not only removes dirt from the carpet but also has an air filtration system to prevent that dirt from being kicked back out into the air.

  • Use less chemical and water — Using less soap and water is not only good for the environment, but it improves overall cleanliness. Foam cleaning solutions use less water and less chemical to create an effective cleaning compound and leaves less water and chemical behind after cleaning.
While green cleaning is good for the environment and good for the health of your building and those in it, it’s also good for your bottom line. In fact, green cleaning can result in improved productivity; fewer employee sick days; greater employee retention; reduced liability, insurance and legal costs and more.
